I have taught both of my children sign (being a special needs teacher, I almost did it without thinking) My eldest 2 and a half, was great at it, and we found although he talked at a similar age to his friends, he had much more vocabulary and didn't get as frustrated, as he could always get his message across even when he didn't know the word. Now he talks at a mile a minute, and I wish he would go back to signing!
My daughter who is 11 months is picking new signs up at an amazing rate, I think faster than her brother, it will be interesting to see when her talking develops. I am all for it, there is very little frustration, and when I don't understand I ask her to "show me" and even if she makes a sign up (which she often does) we find the real sign and she soon learns it.
Kids are amazing and just because their vocal chords haven't matured enough for talking doesn't mean they can't talk!

Great post!

I would have thought Lego was pretty gender neutral in itself as it is up to the kids to build what they want with it (once they pull the space stuff apart). There is a Lego "Belville" range specifically targeted at girls though, with lots of pink and white bricks. :)

I was fortunate enough to have a younger brother obsessed with Lego, I played with it as much as he did. :)

Hi Carly,

Why don't you try leaving the kids alone on a LEGO Apple Tree House or Hillside House.
See how the boys and girls interact and who looses interest first

My preschool is going through a bit of a financial crisis right now. We have been a Head Start partnership program since we started about 15 years ago but they just gave us notice that are not going to renew our contract for one reason after another as we have problem solved and came up with solutions. We have gone over our budget several times and the closest we can get it to somewhat stable without the aid from Head Start is still 11,000 in the negative. We just received our NAEYC accreditation this February, and after that long, hard but worthwhile process I do not want to give up so quickly. We want to give it a try on our own without having to raise our rates too much so that we can still provide quality care to low-income families in our community, being one of very few facilities to do so. Do you have any ideas or suggestions about potential backers or foundations that would be willing to support our cause? Thanks for your help!
