Inspired by the most recent Blog This challenge and Childhood101, I have compiled a list of fifty ways to play!
We Play:
- with an empty box
- by investigating rainbows
- by making music
- by rolling on the floor
- in the sandpit
- by jumping
- with books
- by counting numbers
- with goop
- with mud
- with water
- by experimenting with colours
- by exploring robotics
- with the computer
- with the internet
- with dolls
- with cooking
- at the playground
- by dancing to music
- by playing doctors and nurses
- by playing catch the ‘bad’ guy
- by playing families
- in the construction area
- with subitising games
- by running around outside
- by climbing on equipment
- by riding bikes
- with kites
- with cars and trucks
- by building with blocks
- hide and seek
- by acting out a favourite story
- by making items using old or unwanted items
- with sewing
- with cutting and pasting to make a collage
- with sensory items
- by drawing
- by painting
- by experimenting with magnets
- with balls
- with puzzles
- by washing the dolls clothes
- by exploring leaf sizes
- with playdough
- by exploring patterns
- using varying art mediums
- by singing
- with clay
- by taking photographs
- by exploring stories using felt boards
And I could even go on naming other ideas! Play is something that happens everyday and is a tool to help children learn and grow.
This is a part of Childhood101′s We Play link up and Challenge 50 for Blog This.

Great list! Some really simple, some need more organisation, but so nice to have a list that can just trigger an idea for when you need one (or remind you that play does happen all the time without much planning). Thanks! Lou
What a great list. I’m going to bookmark it to remember it all when I’m struggling for ideas and inspiration. Thanks.
Great list. I have a 1yr old and 2yr old so i will definitely be using your list as well as checking out your entire blog! Thanks heaps.
Lots of a great ideas there and so very handy to have a list all in one place to quickly refer back to. Thank you.
Great list Carly and many of them so simple and from household items.
Nice list Carly! Think I will bookmark it. Noticed today that my boys (more so than my girl who just wants to watch Hi-5) just want to play ‘with’ me all the time. Need to find ways to get them to do that and will be using list above for inspiration (‘go find leaves outside of different shapes and sizes’).
Thanks for the inspiration xx
Love it Carly!
Lovely list. It really doesn’t take much to fire the imagination!
Such a great list Carly. We love the playground too. I am going to bookmark this as there are also some great ideas for when DD is just a little older. Off to vote for you now (hoping the comp hasn’t already ended).
Emma
Lots of playtime goodness here, what a great list :)
I will have to print this out and refer to it and never ever be bored again.
