50 Ways to Play

by Carly Lloyd on July 1, 2010

Inspired by the most recent Blog This challenge and Childhood101, I have compiled a list of fifty ways to play!

We Play:

  1. with an empty box
  2. by investigating rainbows
  3. by making music
  4. by rolling on the floor
  5. in the sandpit
  6. by jumping
  7. with books
  8. by counting numbers
  9. with goop
  10. with mud
  11. with water
  12. by experimenting with colours
  13. by exploring robotics
  14. with the computer
  15. with the internet
  16. with dolls
  17. with cooking
  18. at the playground
  19. by dancing to music
  20. by playing doctors and nurses
  21. by playing catch the ‘bad’ guy
  22. by playing families
  23. in the construction area
  24. with subitising games
  25. by running around outside
  26. by climbing on equipment
  27. by riding bikes
  28. with kites
  29. with cars and trucks
  30. by building with blocks
  31. hide and seek
  32. by acting out a favourite story
  33. by making items using old or unwanted items
  34. with sewing
  35. with cutting and pasting to make a collage
  36. with sensory items
  37. by drawing
  38. by painting
  39. by experimenting with magnets
  40. with balls
  41. with puzzles
  42. by washing the dolls clothes
  43. by exploring leaf sizes
  44. with playdough
  45. by exploring patterns
  46. using varying art mediums
  47. by singing
  48. with clay
  49. by taking photographs
  50. by exploring stories using felt boards

And I could even go on naming other ideas! Play is something that happens everyday and is a tool to help children learn and grow.

This is a part of Childhood101′s We Play link up and Challenge 50 for Blog This.

Great list! Some really simple, some need more organisation, but so nice to have a list that can just trigger an idea for when you need one (or remind you that play does happen all the time without much planning). Thanks! Lou

Nice list Carly! Think I will bookmark it. Noticed today that my boys (more so than my girl who just wants to watch Hi-5) just want to play ‘with’ me all the time. Need to find ways to get them to do that and will be using list above for inspiration (‘go find leaves outside of different shapes and sizes’).

Thanks for the inspiration xx

Such a great list Carly. We love the playground too. I am going to bookmark this as there are also some great ideas for when DD is just a little older. Off to vote for you now (hoping the comp hasn’t already ended).
