Subitising Game

by Carly Lloyd on October 7, 2009

Egg Puzzle.

Rationale
Giving children the opportunity to match the corresponding dots and in turn learning about subitising.

Materials Needed
:: Egg Puzzle laminated [both pieces and full version] – can use different coloured paper
:: a die

Experience
Have children in small groups [maximum four] and each have a turn at rolling the die. The corresponding number on the die needs to match to the number of dots. First to fill up the Egg wins.

Prior Knowledge
:: One-to-one correspondence
:: Beginning subitising [ability to look at die and know how many dots without counting] [Early Stage 1]
:: Counting to 6

Age Group
Aimed for kindergarten children. [Early Stage 1]

Alternative for 3-5 year olds
Instead of using a numbered die, use a die with dots.

Alternative for 7-8 year olds [Stage 1]
Increase the number of dots on the Egg Puzzle and use of the die with numbers [could use more than one die].

Remember to always encourage children when they are using mathematics and make it fun! Children learn best through play!

We have a DK dinosaur game that is like this and it is a favourite of my 3.5 year old. We use a dot dice and it is great at helping him with his one to one correspondence.
