Resource for Preschoolers and School Age

by Carly Lloyd on July 12, 2009

I’m back! Okay. So terribly sorry for my lack of posts the last week but was just too busy and didn’t have the spare time to keep both of my blogs updated.

The book ‘The Gruffalo’ by Julia Donaldson is one that I just love reading to children.

It is a great book and one that children love. I have read this to both age groups and they loved it. I used this book whilst I was on practical in both the 3-5 year old room and also with year 2 children [7-8 years].

Julia Donaldson has also written a follow up book that goes with ‘The Gruffalo’; which is ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’. Both of these books are great resources for children.

Not only that – but ‘The Gruffalo’ has its own website too! gruffalo.com where there are plenty of resources for you and your children.

When I was on practical and using this book with the year two children. I developed my own adjective worksheet. [Though was later informed that it wasn't hard enough for them. Though many children were having difficulties].

Here is the worksheet used with the year two class:[Note: It is a word document. If you would like a copy - please feel free to email me and I will send you the attachment.]

To accompany the worksheet I made up ‘bingo’ cards. So in paint I just created a 3×3 table and wrote adjectives within these squares. I then called them out and the children placed a counter on that square if they had the adjective. This was done as the children I was teaching were having a lot of trouble using adjectives within their writing and I was using this to show them how many adjectives there is. [After this I found their adjective work greatly improved].

After you read the book to follow on with the ideas throughout you could:

* Act out the book with the children.
* Have the children create their own Gruffalo.
* Discuss feelings that the children might have felt if they were each of the characters.
* Make some of the foods – i.e. you cannot make owl icecream so discuss with the children the alternative; same with scrambled snake – what is something that we can scramble?

Enjoy!
