Balls

by Carly Lloyd on June 5, 2009

Since working in a corporate centre in the CBD of Sydney with babies I have a tonne for this age group.

Balls

Rationale
From a young age, children love balls of all sizes. During the sensorimotor stage {as described by Piaget}, children of this age will experiment with textures using their mouths and hands. Therefore, using balls that have a difference in texture allow the children to explore there senses.

Materials Needed
:: Balls of different textures and sizes {that can be mouthed}

Experience
For the younger children setting up the room in way whereby they can access the balls freely is essential. By placing one – three balls on a mat within crawling distance is key.
Whereas, for older children around one year of age. You could place the balls into a large container whereby they are kept and the child can go and select a ball. Or you could sit with the child {a short distance away} and roll the ball to one another. Thereby engaging in social play also.

Prior Knowledge
None.

Age Group
Birth – Two years.

Alternatives for Two – Three Year Olds
Engaging more within the social aspects of play and rolling the ball between other children and the teacher.
Moving to other objects that roll, such as cars that highlight the movement similar to that of the balls.

Alternatives for Three – Five Year Olds
Catching and kicking games will further develop hand/eye coordination as well as the extension of the larger gross motor muscles within the legs and arms.
Experimenting with objects that roll and those that do not.

Alternatives for Five – Eight Year Olds
Furthering on the child’s knowledge of movement and gravity, by further exploring the movement of as many objects as possible.
Continued catching and kicking games that extend hand/eye coordination, as continued practice will further this skill and the development of the large muscles within the legs and arms.
